Potter of the Month

  • What is your ceramics history? What drew you to pottery?

I’m a Texas-born Cuban raising a family in New England! I enjoy creating functional pottery at our studio coop. When I’m not covered in clay, I enjoy listening to music and spending time outdoors with my family.

I started taking pottery classes at the Indianapolis Art Center in January 2019. I instantly fell in love with the process. After moving to the East Coast in Fall 2019, I continued taking classes at Potters Place before becoming a studio member in March 2021.

  • What inspires your pottery?

They say home is a feeling, not a place and that’s been my experience working with clay. My pottery is inspired by the home I feel when I’m in Nature and the deep, soulful connection that I’ve found in the clay.

  • What 3 words do you think of when you think of pottery?

    Grounding. Spiritual. Gratitude.

  • What life lessons have you learned from pottery?

Clay requires your full attention - a calm and present mind will translate better through the clay versus a troubled or distracted self. Ceramics has taught me to be more flexible, adjust expectations, and most importantly, enjoy the process!

  • What is your greatest challenge (related to pottery) and how have you conquered it?

One of my goals is to learn how to throw large and tall bodies of clay. I am also trying to take better notes and measurements so I can improve on my consistency.

  • What is the most rewarding part of the creation process for you?

It is so empowering and soul-filling to follow a piece from the idea stage all the way through to production. Also, when a piece survives the kiln!

  • Finish this sentence: People would be surprised if they knew...

I am a classically trained violinist - I began learning violin when I was 5 and continued through part of college. I have many fond memories playing in ensembles and large, full set orchestras. I played in the orchestra for the "The Pajama Game" musical and loved performing "The Planets" by Gustav Holst. And here is one of my favorite classical pieces, this is what I would blast in my room as a high schooler.

  • Show us a piece you’re most proud of. Why does it make you happy?

I am in love with this progress piece I've been working on behind the scenes. I've been a long-time admirer of Nat Power's Crawfish Cowboy tattoo design and she graciously granted me permission to use her design on some personal pieces. These were hand-painted with underglaze and an absolute delight to put together. For the sake of transparency, these colors did not translate as beautifully in its final firing, but so goes the joys and tribulations of working with clay. Nevertheless, this design was a joy to create and a fun challenge. I'm looking forward to tweaking future clay and glaze combinations for a more successful finish.
