Potter of the Month

  • What is your ceramics history?

I majored in Psychology and Studio Art in college with an emphasis in sculpture and pottery, followed by a Masters Degree in Child Development/Family Relations. After many years teaching Special Education and a career in the fitness field I found an opportunity to return to pottery at Potters Place. I took classes and then had the chance to become a member about 7 Years ago. It is so wonderful to be back in a studio making pottery again!

  • What inspires your pottery?

Growing up in a Foreign Service family fueled my eclectic taste in art and design from around the world. Our house was filled with art and artifacts from Japan, Egypt and Lebanon.

  • What is your favorite forming method or style?

I love to throw pottery on the wheel and the feeling of centering and pulling up the clay into shapes is so satisfying.

  • What is the most rewarding part of the creation process for you?

I especially love to make functional pieces such as mugs and bowls and enjoy the thought of people using my pottery in their daily life. Most potters have had the experience of watching someone choose and buy one of their special pieces and hold it to their heart.

  • What life lessons have you learned from ceramics?

Patience is one of the things I’ve learned from being a potter. This particular creative process takes quite a bit of time from conception, throwing, trimming, drying, bisque firing, glazing and firing again. You really have to do a lot of waiting!

It’s such a good feeling when pieces come out of the kiln and they are better than you pictured in your mind.

  • What three words do you think of when you think of pottery?

Creativity… it’s definitely my favorite creative activity

Muddy… in a smooth and earthy way

    Centering… both literally and metaphorically

  • What is your greatest pottery challenge and how have you conquered it?

My greatest challenge with respect to pottery is wanting to create unique and different pieces. To achieve this I’ve been having fun experimenting with carving, altering and trying out new glaze combinations and techniques.

We all love opening up a kiln and seeing how our work turns out. It’s a great feeling when a piece comes out beautifully!

  • People would be surprised if they knew ...

… that I was in the fitness field for 28 years. I taught a variety of classes to adults and kids and was a group fitness director for many gyms in the various places we lived. I still love to work out, bike and hike with my husband and dog Ani.

I sell my pottery at the Potters Place Outdoor Sales in the Spring and Fall and at various local farmers markets and craft fairs throughout the year.
