Potter of the Month

  • What is your ceramics history?

I'm a self-taught potter. I've been throwing pots for approximately 23 years. In 2005, I started creating custom animal vessels - everything from cookie jars to frog bowls to urns.

Oddly I attended one of the best Ceramic Art institutions and never focused on ceramics. However, I always had an appreciation for the art form so when the opportunity arose to learn through Potter's Place I took it.

  • What inspires your pottery?

Everything from the mood I am in to emulating others' work and making that inspiration my own.

I love animals - especially dogs - which is why I named my pottery Beau Chien Pottery (French for “handsome dog pottery”).

  • What is your favorite forming method or style?

I love making one-of-a-kind creations and functional stoneware. I love Raku as an art form as well and enjoy the process.

I developed my style through classes and workshops… and lots of practice.

  • What is the most rewarding part of the creation process for you?

Seeing with my eyes what was in my head.

You never know what the final pot will be until it emerges from the glaze kiln. It’s so rewarding when the finished piece is just what I had in my mind.

  • What life lessons have you learned from ceramics?

Patience. One cannot force what nature does not allow. Through ceramics I have learned I am not always in control and how to accept that.

  • What three words do you think of when you think of pottery?

    Functional, sustainable art

  • Peoples would be surprised if they knew...

… I am shy about my work

  • Can you show us a piece you're particularly proud of?

In my mind, this was a perfect Raku piece.

Beau Chien Pottery

I sell my pottery through Beau Chien Pottery and at the Potters Place Show & Sale. The next Show and Sale will be on October 1, 2022. I hope to see you there.
